Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November — Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after Diwali. The Purnima tithi begins at 11:42 PM on Monday 23 November and ends at 8:23 PM on Tuesday 24 November, so the deepdan (lighting of lamps) is done on the evening of the 24th, in the pradosh kaal after sunset (about 5:07 PM in Varanasi, 5:25 PM in Delhi) and before the tithi ends at 8:23 PM.

Why the gods celebrate Diwali

Kartik Purnima is also called Tripurari Purnima. According to the Shiva Purana, this is the day Lord Shiva destroyed the demon Tripurasura and freed the three worlds. The gods came down to the banks of the Ganga at Kashi to celebrate, lighting lamps in gratitude — which is why the night is called Dev Deepawali, the Diwali of the gods. The same Purnima is sacred as the day of Vishnu’s Matsya avatar, and Kartik Snan, the month-long dawn bath in holy rivers, concludes with it.

Dev Diwali in Varanasi

Varanasi’s 84 ghats, from Assi to Rajghat, are lit with more than ten lakh diyas on Dev Diwali evening. The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is the centrepiece, with the Ganga Mahotsav, shobha yatras and fireworks over the river. Boats are booked weeks ahead; if you plan to go, reach the ghats by 4 PM, or watch from a boat hired from Assi or Raja Ghat for the full stretch of lit steps. Dev Diwali is also celebrated at Haridwar, Prayagraj, Pushkar (the last day of the Pushkar Mela, with the Kartik Purnima snan) and at many Shiva temples.

Guru Nanak Jayanti on the same day

Kartik Purnima 2026 is also Guru Nanak Jayanti — the Prakash Parv marking the 557th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Gurdwaras hold Akhand Path, Nagar Kirtan and langar; the Golden Temple in Amritsar is lit through the night. Share a Gurpurab greeting with your name with Sikh friends and colleagues.

What to do at home on Dev Diwali

• Take a bath before sunrise if you can (Kartik Snan) and offer water to the Sun.
• After sunset, light 11, 21 or 51 diyas — at the Tulsi plant, the main door, and around the house. One lamp is traditionally offered at a river, pond or temple (deepdan).
• Read or listen to the Satyanarayan katha; offer kheer or halwa as bhog.
• Keep the day sattvik — no non-veg, onion, garlic or alcohol on Purnima.
• Donate food, warm clothes or lamps; Kartik Purnima daan is considered especially fruitful.
