Pongal Festival 2025: A Harvest Festival of India

Pongal, celebrated from January 14 to January 17, 2025. Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by the Tamil community. It is a celebration to thank the Sun, Mother Nature and the various farm animals that help to contribute to a bountiful harvest. Celebrated over four days, Pongal also marks the beginning of the Tamil month called Thai, which is considered an auspicious month. It usually falls on the 14th or 15th of January each year.

Pongal is also the name of the dish made and eaten during this festival. It is a mixture of boiled sweet rice. It is derived from the Tamil word pongu, which means “to boil over”.

Why Is Pongal Celebrated?

Pongal symbolizes the harmony between humans, nature, and animals. It is celebrated to thank:

The Sun God (Surya) for providing the energy needed to grow crops.

Cows and Bulls for their indispensable role in agriculture.

Nature and the Land for nourishing life.

Historically, it represents the transition from hard work in the fields to the joyous harvesting of crops. The overflowing pot of Pongal (a sweet rice dish) signifies abundance and prosperity.

Why Is Pongal Celebrated on These Dates?

Pongal aligns with the astronomical event of the Sun moving into the zodiac sign Makara (Capricorn), which marks the start of Uttarayan—the Sun’s northward journey. This event coincides with the winter harvest season, making it the perfect time to celebrate the fruits of labor.

How Is Pongal Celebrated?

The festival spans four days, each with unique rituals:

Bhogi Pongal (January 14):

Houses are cleaned, old belongings are discarded, and bonfires are lit, symbolizing the removal of negativity.

Thai Pongal (January 15):

The main day when the Pongal dish is prepared. Families offer it to the Sun God as a token of gratitude.
Mattu Pongal (January 16):

Cows and bulls are worshipped for their contribution to agriculture. They are bathed, decorated with garlands, and given special treats.

Kaanum Pongal (January 17):

A day for socializing and spending time with family. Many families organize picnics or visit relatives to strengthen bonds.
