Why We Celebrate Guru Purnima: To Honor Our Life-Fillful

In Indian culture a Guru is more than a teacher — a Guru is the one who “removes darkness (gu) and gives light (ru)”. To celebrate Guru Purnima, is sacred because it is an embodiment of the divine relationship between Guru and disciple. Celebrating Guru Purnima takes place on the full moon (Purnima) in the month of Ashadha on the Hindu calendar; it is a time of giving gratitude, and more importantly, to raise awakening.

🙏 Why is Guru So Important in Every Life?

From our very first step, to whatever heights we reach, we have benefited from others little and big. It can be a spiritual teacher, school teacher, elder, parent, or friend – a Guru is someone who helps you rise above ignorance, fear, and confusion. They not only teach you subjects; they also shape how you look at the world, make you believe in yourself and give knowledge that will last a lifetime.

🔱 A Guru Shows you the Right Way

Throughout life there are crossroads. A moment arises when looking ahead, you don’t know which path to travel. A Guru won’t walk the path for you, but will will empower you with wisdom to make the right decision. They guide us not only to success but also to truth and meaning. They see the light within us at times when we can’t. Their teaching is like a compass that points toward our truth and will always work, even when we feel lost.

✨ The Spiritual Dimension

Guru Purnima is also celebrated in memory of the great sage Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata and multiple Vedic texts. He is considered the Adi Guru — the first teacher. In yoga traditions, it is also the day that Lord Shiva became the Adi Yogi — the first yogi — and passed on his knowledge to his disciples — the Saptarishis.
