Dev Diwali 2024: The Festival of Divine Lights
Date: November 15, 2024
What is Dev Diwali?
Dev Diwali, also known as “Diwali of the Gods,” is a vibrant and spiritually significant festival celebrated fifteen days after Diwali, on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Kartik. This festival is distinct from the more widely known Diwali and holds a unique place in Hindu tradition as it is believed to be the time when the gods themselves descend to Earth to celebrate and bless devotees.
Why is Dev Diwali Celebrated?
The story of Dev Diwali is rooted in the Hindu legend of Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura. According to ancient beliefs, Tripurasura had gained immense power and caused havoc across the universe. After seeking blessings from the deities, Lord Shiva finally defeated him on Kartik Purnima, marking the triumph of good over evil. This victory, celebrated by both the gods and humans, became Dev Diwali—a festival dedicated to the gods and a symbol of divine blessings and protection.
Significance of Dev Diwali
Dev Diwali is much more than a festival of lights; it is a time for deep spiritual reverence. People celebrate Dev Diwali as an opportunity to honor the divine, seek blessings, and cleanse their sins. Many Hindus believe that by participating in this festival, they are directly connecting with the divine energies and inviting prosperity and peace into their lives.
Where is Dev Diwali Celebrated?
The epicenter of Dev Diwali celebrations is Varanasi (Kashi), one of the oldest and most revered cities in India. Located on the banks of the sacred Ganga River, Varanasi attracts thousands of devotees and tourists during this time. While Dev Diwali is celebrated in various parts of North India, the grandeur of the celebrations in Varanasi stands unmatched.
