Dhanteras 2024: Welcoming Prosperity and Wellness
Dhanteras, the opening day of the Diwali festivities, celebrates the blessings of wealth, prosperity, and health. In 2024, it will be observed on Tuesday, October 29th. The word “Dhanteras” is taken from “Dhan,” and that mean wealth, and “Teras,” referring to the 13th day of the Hindu’s month’s of Kartik. That day is significant as it honors *Lord Dhanvantari *the divine healer and god of medicine, who is believed to have emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan, holding a pot of Amrit, symbolizing eternal health and vitality. Itβs also a time to invoke the blessings of Goddess Sri Lakshmi the deity of wealth, and God Kuber, the guardian of treasure and riches .
The tradition of Dhanteras involves purchasing precious items such as new utensils, gold,, and silver as these are believed to bring prosperity and good luck into the household. On this day, families clean and decorate their homes with diyas (oil lamps) and colorful rangoli designs to create an inviting atmosphere for wealth and positive energy. In the evening, the Lakshmi Puja is performed, with prayers offered to seek the goddessβs blessings for a prosperous and healthy life.
More than just a celebration of material wealth, Dhanteras is also a time for focusing on well-being and renewal. The festival encourages reflection on health and happiness, emphasizing the holistic well-being of the family and ensuring that the coming year brings abundance, harmony, and good fortune in every aspect of life.
