Day 1 – Dhanteras
The festival begins with Dhanteras, dedicated to health, wealth, and prosperity. People buy gold, silver, or new utensils as it is considered auspicious. Homes are cleaned and decorated with rangoli and lights to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.
Day 2 – Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)
This day is also known as Choti Diwali. It commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. People light diyas, burst a few crackers, and prepare festive sweets. It is believed to drive away negativity and darkness.
Day 3 – Lakshmi Puja (Main Diwali Day)
The most important day of Diwali. Families perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening, seeking blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity. Diyas and candles illuminate every corner, fireworks fill the sky, and families gather for feasts and prayers.
Day 4 – Govardhan Puja / Annakut
On this day, devotees worship Lord Krishna, who lifted the Govardhan mountain to protect villagers from heavy rains. People prepare a variety of vegetarian dishes as offerings (Annakut) to express gratitude.
Day 5 – Bhai Dooj
The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, a day to honor the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being, perform tika rituals, and brothers give gifts in return. It’s a celebration of love and family ties.
