On August 15, 2025, India will proudly celebrate its 78th Independence Day, remembering freedom, resilience, and remarkable progress. It is a day that is not only a national holiday, but also a festival for countless freedom fighters who sacrificed so much to realize their dream of a free and sovereign India.

What does Indian Independence mean?

On August 15, 1947, India gained freedom from the British government after nearly two hundred years of colonial government. The journey to freedom was long and arduous, but it was made possible by the momentum of a broad movement of diverse leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Indian nationalist Bhagat Singh along with countless others.

Why We Celebrate:

Independence Day brought an end to British colonization in 1947 and marked the birth of a new sovereign nation. It is a day dedicated to honoring and remembering the efforts and sacrifices of so many leaders from revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel to visionaries, Social reformers and other leaders along with millions of colonized individuals whose bravery and vision has shaped modern India.

How We Celebrate:

Celebrating Independence Day can take many forms, from hoisting flags in schools and offices to parades and cultural programs, every corner of India and all the citizens will be alive with the colors of the tricolor flag. The Prime Minister also addresses the nation with a speech from the Red Fort in Delhi. For many Indians, it is a highlight of the day, which in part reminds us of our oath of responsibility as citizens of a free nation.

State Level Functions

Each event’s celebrations at each of their state capitals are responsible and coordinated by the Chief Ministers and Governors for state celebrations. Event’s at the state level typically have Flag hoisting ceremony’s, parade displays, performance by elementary and high schools, rallies and tributes for the Martyrs. It is not uncommon for the celebrations to run over 3-4 days.

Schools and colleges are also a very important part of the celebration. On 15th August, at the same time educational institutions all over India will be holding their programs. For the most part, the school day unfolds with the principal or Chief Guests (school alum), raising the national flag and singing the national anthem.
