Dussehra or Vijayadashami is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India. It comes on the tenth day of the Ashwin month (as per the Hindu calendar) and marks the triumph of righteousness, courage, and truth. In 2025, Dussehra will be celebrated with devotion throughout the country. It serves as a reminder to everyone that “Good will always prevail over Evil”.

Story Behind Dussehra - The Legend of Lord Rama

The most popular story associated with Dussehra is from the famous epic called Ramayana. The story depicts Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, fighting the demon king Ravana on this day. Ravana was a great scholar, however, was blinded by ego and abducted Goddess Sita. Lord Rama had Hanuman and his armies fight alongside him in a battle of epic proportions in Lanka against Ravana. His victory symbolizes the end of evil and arrogance.

The Story of Goddess Durga

In some places, especially eastern India, Dussehra is connected with Durga Puja. According to Hindu folklore, this celebrates the battle where Goddess Durga did battle with Mahishasura, a powerful buffalo demon who could not be defeated by any man or god. Maa Durga, the Goddess who represents Shakti (feminine divine energy), battled Mahishasura for nine days and nine nights then killed him on the tenth day. The tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashami. This symbolizes that divine power has overcome confusion and the destruction of life.

Importance of Dussehra

Upholding Good over Evil – Dussehra signifies that lies and wrongdoing will not prevail over truth and virtue.

Killing of Ego and Pride – The destruction of Ravana should remind all people that arrogance is a sure path to self-destruction.

The Power of Shakti – The story of Durga teaches to be courageous and determined in the face of adversity.

Cultural Diversity – Dussehra is a festival that is unique to its location throughout India. Each region represents parts of India and those communities; each region shows their form of Dussehra.

Dussehra’s Spiritual Message

Dussehra means much more than taking the praise for burning Ravan or historically defeating the demons. The greater lesson to emerge from this festival is to revolve around battling internally the demons of greed, anger, hatred, and ego. Just as Lord Rama and Goddess Durga show us how conquer external evil, we are to focus on conquering the negativity within ourselves and striving to live a good life.

Final Thoughts

Dussehra 2025 serves to be a reminder to pursue truth, have humility, and embrace courage in our lives. It is about inspiring every person to choose dharma (divine righteousness) over adharma (evil) and light over darkness.
